"Johnny in his Grave" is a reinterpretation of the cautionary tale genre in Irish folk balladry. The story is told from the perspective of a young man who falls in love at first sight with a woman. Despite her rejection of his advances, he follows her to a cemetery, where he hears her speaking to the grave of her dead lover. The tale ends with what could be interpreted as a warning to all cat-callers and stalkers: the consequences of ignoring rejection.

lyrics

As I went down to the center of the town
I spied a young maid so tender
And to her I said, "I would rather be dead
Than to live another day alone, dear"

Said she, "My good man, you must have me mistaken
For someone who gives a damn, dear
I'm on my way to visit Johnny in his grave
And I haven't time for such men as you, dear"

So she spun on her heel and she went her merry way
But my heart, oh my heart, had frozen
For I knew just then I had to have this maiden
Have her as the wife I'd chosen

I made up my mind and I followed her behind
To the place where lay her Johnny dear-o
And I heard her weep, "It has only been one week
Since from this earth you left me here-o"

Well, the hour it was late so I started for the gate
But I heard a low voice call my name-o
So I turned around and to my dismay I found
The ghost of maiden's Johnny dear-o

"It is I!" he weary cried, I could see his rotting eyes
I could see the place he'd been wounded
"Come back just to say from my lady stay away
Or suffer just the same as I did"

And there standing near was my maiden and her tears,
"I told you to leave me alone, dear
I was on my way to visit Johnny in his grave
And I hadn't time for such men as you, dear"
